He worked for the Daily Mail as a feature writer and diarist from 1981 until 1997 when he moved to the Sunday Telegraph, where he edited the Mandrake column for four years. His most recent position was as Columnist and feature writer for the Sunday and Daily Express“.
 
From 2019 he has specialised in media and communications advice, most recently for the NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre) and Cabinet Office.
